CASA Overview & Regulatory Structure

CASA Compliance & Regulatory Framework

Understand how Australian drone rules are organised and where to verify the rules before a commercial mission.

FIELD LESSON

Briefing

The operating frame

Commercial drone work in Australia sits inside CASA rules, especially the remotely piloted aircraft provisions under Part 101. The practical question for a pilot is not “can this drone fly?” but “which rule set applies to this aircraft, location, weight, purpose, altitude, airspace, and client task?”

Excluded does not mean careless

Some small-drone work can be simpler to begin with, but simplified pathways still carry obligations around safety, people, property, privacy, airspace, and local site constraints. Treat every paid job as a documented operation, even when the regulation pathway is lighter.

When to pause

Pause and verify if the job involves controlled airspace, night work, populous areas, restricted areas, operations near emergency activity, heavy aircraft, subcontractors, or client pressure to fly outside the agreed plan.

PRACTICE TASK

Make it operational.

Take one real suburb or worksite you might service and write a one-page rule check: aircraft, job type, airspace source used, likely operating pathway, and unknowns to verify.

PREMIUM DEEP DIVE

Source-backed training for paid pilots.

This layer turns the reference links into practical operating knowledge: what to read, what to decide, what to save, and how to prove the lesson in a real pilot profile.
